Unit 2: An Era of European Imperialism Imperialism has had its breadth in existence from a very long time ago, even before the Industrial Revolution. Industrialized countries pursed imperialism for many reasons. Imperialism is the creation and maintenance of an unequal economic, cultural, and territorial relationship, usually between states and often in the form of an empire, which is based on domination and subordination. Although imperialism was in occurrence before the First and Second Revolution, it impacted the world in the time between these two revolutions.Europe was facing a new era of imperialism, and the First Industrial Revolution was only its way of beginning. The First Industrial Revolution was occurring from 1750 to 1850. This dramatically changed the economic and cultural conditions of the nation based on advances in agriculture, transportation, mining, and manufacturing. With the cottage industry’s advancement to a textile industry, there were mass productions of textile with the invention of the Spinning Jenny, and there were also migrations to urban centers.Coal was used as energy during this time. There was population growth throughout this period due to the vast productions, leading people to live longer. Moreover, the invention of the steam boat/ship, in the late 1700s improved travel drastically. The quicker and more reliable steam ships allowed Europe to exploit their colonies. They established colonies in Africa, India, China, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and South America it was depended that they had a good resource in getting there.They were able to sell their manufactured products in the markets they had set up in these places. All these ideas/manufactures were contributions to not only the Second Industrial Revolution, but also on imperialism; which impacted the whole world. Furthermore, the Second Industrial Revolution occurred during the late 1800s to the early 1900s leading onto World War I. This revolution began with the m ovement of new inventions. Electricity, steel, petroleum, and chemicals were the main new advancements. Electricity replaced coal for energy, and was more efficient.Steel was the new iron, because it was much more durable and lighter, it was even better on the economy. Other inventions like the light bulb, radio waves, telephones, and the internal combustion engine rapidly spread throughout the world, leading to profit. Trade labor unions arose, as well as women and labor reforms. All these things were impacts on imperialism throughout the world. Warfare was also an impact on the Industrial Revolution. Technological advancements in warfare made conquering undeveloped countries very easy.This made their power and influence stronger. On the other side of the world, we had countries like China and Japan, which was kept, isolated from the world. These places did not want to adapt western influences because it would drive them from their cultural ways. In China, they were undergoing what was known as the Boxer Rebellion, which allowed the killing of outsiders who were bringing other influences to China. There was also the Opium War happening in Japan, which allowed the country to industrialize itself a bit.Because of industrialization, China and Japan were able to grow in ways they would have never achieved if they had never adapted western influences. Although imperialism was in occurrence before the First and Second Revolution, it impacted the world in the time between these two revolutions. Capitalism was a key concept that was used to make profit off of laborers that lived in industrialized areas. Capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.Basically, this is an economical system based on all greed in money and power. Capitalism controlled the environment in the First and Second Industrial Revolution. The countries and companies that supported capita lism were eventually going to lead laborers to seek new opportunities and resources of growth. This would lead people to seek and explore new places. Exploration would cause taking advantage of other people, hence, imperialism. The times of the revolutions would lead to imperialism throughout the world because the industries were being operated by capitalism.

The company initially thrived on venturing in new markets and exiting them when the competition became a little bit stiff. If someone has a poor body image, he or she would most likely try to do anything or any method to change the looks of its body, even if it means restricting food or taking potentially harmful substances. For a woman, they will think that their body is too heavy and as for men, their thoughts are divided into two parts: overweight and underweight. For example, what is actually considered an ideal body for a man is when they have a low body fat, lots of muscles, narrow waist, large shoulders, and body with a V-shaped torso. When another man sees this kind of image, they will say that this is the kind of body they want to have. This kind of negative influence can encourage, especially the young teenagers and adults to starve themselves, take diet pills and by doing that it can cause anorexia, a type of eating disorder or many other types of health problems. For example, when a children look at the models they might think that the only way to look like them is to go on a diet. Although I may have to agree that it is the easy way to become thin, but knowing that it can cause many harms to the body itself. Diet pills is also another fast and easy way to manage their weight; however, diet pills also contain diuretics or stimulants, which can cause sleeping problems, seizures, high blood pressure and more.In addition, when men and women are dissatisfied with their body and starts doing all sorts of stuff that causes health problems, they then starts to feel depressed and have low self-esteem. An unhealthy body may increase the changes in an individual’s behavior and attitude. We see each other once a year, through out the year we keep on using technology to keep us together and not separate, it also gives us our own time to our self to relax and think straight, know if this is the right person or not for you. My question for the people who always think negative about technology is â€Å"h ow can we have a social life when we have no technology in life? How can that alp our associate and make us more open to the real word? Technology can assist to keep the bond stronger between two married or engaged or in a relationship couple. The world needs to change their negative image because there are so many positive things about technology that helped us reach where we are today and where we will be in the future with the technology growth in our lives. Love is a strong word that can't be found easily. Technology allows people to find love all around the world. Cell phones has a huge impact on our life that keeps us in touch with our partners also families.I think technology can grow so much bigger that people will start loving technology, and actually see the bigger picture of how technology helps us stay connected to the real world. As Alex Williams claims in his essay that there are many positive effects of technology that helped and still helps families. As if now people know so much more about other countries, seeing pictures of beautiful nature gives the hope to a better life and border thinking. Secondly nations in global economy are pointing towards being interdependent and open in a growing way. Resources were found to increase long term growth. Economists then transferred their focus to neoclassical economics in the late 19th century and the early 20th century, which comprises of a closed economy. They developed tasks to thoroughly look at optimizing the use of scarce resources by businesses. The focus was on short-term growth rather than long-term growth. The worldwide depression of 1903, J.M Keynes's aggregate demand management was found as a solution to reduce cyclical fluctuation and leading to unemployment. Other effects with recent finding s are the cause of depression and social attempts by teenagers and young adults who feel they cannot live up to the standards set online. Almost 80% of teenagers and adults are on social media platforms. In contrasting the earlier years of economic growth evolution and technological evolution. The above benefits and controversies mark a not so out of touch difference in the line of the length technology has gone in its development. Meaning it is still focused in more ways than one in bettering the world's economy and markets. It is although inevitable for any implementation to have side effects. CONCLUSION Based on the findings of my research I have concluded that technology in its own has diverted into many spheres from the reason of just being introduced to help man cultivate his natural environment. It has not only helped but also overtaken man greatly in its efficiency and operation. Technological innovations have also been developed to be independent from the directory of man. Which may be the result of the lack of control and concerns as to its negative and controversial effect in the larger and global economy. The solution however that I propose is for the larger economy to go back to the fundamental reasons of why technology was introduced every time a new innovation is made. This will harbor controlled growth of the development of economies also in different countries leading up t a greater impact in the world economy. Countries still needing more technological advancement should be assisted by long advanced economies. This will ensure a greater level of desired impact in th growth of the economy and the global GDP and GDP per capita will rise significantly. Technology Questions to research: Are advertisements aimed at teenagers effective? And, are they ethical? My Response:  Most advertisements aimed at teenagers are effective, but usually are not ethical. Most marketers have many ways of gathering information on teenagers spending habits and what is most important to teens. With this information they’re able to create advertisements that will appeal to most teens and create profit. Many people argue that some or most of these ads aren’t ethical because they will create a problem or insecurity and then give the solution to that problem in the form of their product.Central Idea: The most effective ads show teens using and enjoying a product. The least effective were those that caused an emotional response. A teen’s acceptance of ads varies according to the media platform. The medium with the lowest teen ad acceptance was texting. This is considered an effective ad because it features the newest upgrade of their product, they’re being shown new features and games, and seeing other teens happy  with the product would give them a positive feeling about having it. This ad also shows both genders enjoying their product, suggesting they support both genders using the PS4. An example of an ineffective ad would be the Microsoft Surface commercial, in this commercial you can see people enjoying their product but you’re not given a look at what their product can do. It’s a fun ad to watch, but it doesn’t provide enough information for a teen to considering buying their product.Lastly, many advertisements aimed at teens have been said to be unethical in order to be effective. Marketers will bring up a problem in their advertisement; this problem might be based on social status, then they will provide a solution in the form of their product. For example, in this Samsung Galaxy S4 commercial you see only younger people using their product while the older people are just learning about this product. This suggests that if you have their product you’d be cool and up to date with the world around you. This ad seems to guilt the target into thinking what they have isn’t good enough and their product would make them cooler.ConclusionIn conclusion, I think advertisements aimed at teens are effective, but unethical. Teens are being exposed to advertisements more each day. Advertisements can be found all around them, in schools, online, through T.V., etc. Marketers are constantly doing r esearch to improve ads to be more appealing to their target audience, teens. Through the information they gather, they can create advertisements that will persuade their audience into buying their product. An effective ad would feature other teens enjoying their product. An effective, but unethical ad, would be an ad that brings up a problem, such as a teen’s social status, and then present a solution in the form of their product.

Without cooperation, sacrifice and involvement of all Indians it was impossible to get the freedom. So people of India were the real national heroes behind the success. We should express our sincere gratitude to all those who participated in the freedom struggle. This can only be done by defending our freedom like our ancestral property which cannot be valued. How to defend? Single person cannot defend it; again group effort is essential it is nothing but unity. How to form this unity? We should always remember that only patriotism can form unity irrespective of religion, language, caste, customs and traditions. So having patriotism only can save the freedom of our nation. Rear Window; Alfred Hitchcock

After watching Rear Window for a second time I’ve come to realize that not only is Alfred Hitchcock a great director, but also a great movie watcher. What I’m trying to say is that he knows exactly what people want to see in certain movies. Voyeurism captures the attention of anyone, viewers want to â€Å"spy† on the characters without being seen, and they want to be in positions that reality doesn’t allow them to be in. Hitchcock knows this feeling all too well, making one of the greatest movies of all time around that one obsession viewers have. This is why Rear Window is a great movie for ENC 1102, along with the romantic tension and multiple subplots. The first time a saw the movie I really didn’t see the voyeurism of the film, mostly because it was in my high school humanities class and was told to figure out the story behind the thriller. The teacher told us to find out the mystery of Mr. Thorwald. But after refreshing myself of the movie a noticed that Hitchcock was a very smart, nosy man, just like the rest of society. I pictured Hitchcock in the wheelchair watching all those people out of his window, and then myself and came to realize that anyone would watch if it were open to you. This led me to recognize that the movie, behind the crime investigation, was all about voyeurism and how people love to see without being seen. I watched it with my brother, who is a film major at UCF, and he too thought the same thing. We discussed the movie afterwards and he came to appreciate the movie for being shot in one area. The one person that does get to live the voyeurism in the movie is James Stewart. He’s the perfect main character, L. B â€Å"Jeff† Jeffries, who is a photojournalist. While on the job he broke his leg at an auto race after a big crash. Because of this he is confined to his own apartment and begins to watch all his neighbors and how they go about their day. Behind his building is a courtyard joined by three other buildings. Throughout these three building are different characters that Jefferies watches. There’s a frustrated yet fun loving composer in the building to his right, a middle aged couple with a small dog, a dancer who seems to enjoy practicing her routines, a lonely woman who seems to live in a fantasy world, and a salesman and his unfounded wife all in the building in front of him and a pair of isolated newlyweds that live behind the shades of their apartment window to his left. As he sits cooped up in his apartment he begins to notice everyone’s behaviors, when suddenly the salesman’s wife has disappeared. Jeffries and his girlfriend, Lisa Freemont, played by Grace Kelly, become suspicious of the salesman Mr. Thorwald. He begins to watch him every day and notices things that make him that more suspicious, like sending a suitcase off somewhere, having all his wife’s jewelry, or washing the knife and saw in his sink. Where did she go? What's in the trunk that the salesman ships away? What's he been doing with the knives and the saw that he cleans at the kitchen sink? Rear Window was released on August 1, 1954 and was shot in Los Angeles, California. Its company is Paramount Pictures and is in full color and sound. It is listed under many different types of genres like crime, mysteries, thriller and romance. It was nominated for four Oscars, best cinematography, best director, best sound, and best writing. It was nominated in nine other categories at smaller award ceremonies and won four of them. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and had two main characters, L. B Jeffries and Lisa Freemont. Though the movie is one of the greatest ever made by Hitchcock and is supposed to be shot through a rear window, I find it hard for people to have interest in a movie with two main shots. In the movie you see the buildings and courtyard the majority of the time, the other shots being the one of Jeffries apartment and close ups on the individuals in their homes. A user from IMDB. com didn’t like the movie at all, â€Å"I got impatient with Hitchcock's penchant for manipulating reality, as if it didn't matter, in setting up his character conflicts towards suspenseful endings. It's all to do with believing what you see. One should not take for granted any audiences, all of whom are familiar with real life. † (Johnclark-1). Mr. Clark went on to talk about how he felt Hitchcock didn’t bring reality into the film, one of the examples being that in New York no one ever left their doors unlocked and windows open, in fact â€Å"we installed police locks† says Clark. So another reason some people didn’t feel this movie should be ranked as one of the greatest all time. But we go back to voyeurism, and people can’t help but be nosy, and get into other people’s business. Because of this one obsession Hitchcock gets you tangled in subplots and thrilling murder stories. Unless you pay close attention and watch for those unrealistic moments in the movie, you will never even notice them. As I sat and watched the movie never did I think about what people in New York really do with their doors or how often their leave their windows open. What I’m trying to say is that you will never notice these things unless you were told about them prior to watching the movie. I must admit, after reading that review I did see those moments in the film, but never did I think about them when I saw it the first two times. I am more than positive that if you show this in an ENC 1102 class they too will not notice the unrealistic lifestyle in the movie. Another couple reasons to show it in ENC 1102 is because of the voyeurism, romantic tension, and the films multiple subplots. If there is a group of people that love to be part of drama, and know everyone’s business, it’s the age group of 18 to 20 year old college students. They will be so enriched with all the inquisitiveness going on in the movie that they won’t have problems for a week or two in their personal lives. The movie provides an insight on all the characters that live in buildings around that courtyard, and a voice over from Jeffries that voices his thoughts on all their lives. That brings me to my next point, the multiple subplots in the movie. Hitchcock gives the viewers all kinds of stories from the romantic couple who are rarely seen, to the bachelorette ballerina who brings home a guy every night, to the women who can’t get a man and begins to make believe she invites one over for dinner. Another couple with the dog, they show love to each other through the dog, then the musician who throws parties to show off his new music, but struggles just to get there and finally the salesman and his wife, the main story, the murder. Hitchcock develops all these plots that revolve around murder case. They all have something to do with it, or are related in some way to that couple. I don’t believe an 1101 class could keep up with multiple plots as in Rear Window. And then there’s the romantic tension between Jefferies and his girlfriend Lisa. It’s just another part of the movie that anyone could relate to, not just 1102. Jeffries is very intrigued by this woman but has a heavier burden on his mind, the crime across the courtyard. She insists time after time, but he never really takes his mind completely off the situation at hand. As I sat a watched Rear Window for the second time with my brother I asked him a couple questions throughout the movie to get his, soon to be, expertise on what he thought about certain parts. It was a good experience for me knowing that he has a better eye for things that regular movie goers like myself usually don’t tend to catch. He helped me understand the movie a little more, and discussed with me what Hitchcock was trying to do in his film. Even though he’s close enough, my brother doesn’t count as a critic, here are some experts on what they thought about the movie. James Berardinelli liked the movie mainly, once again, because of it voyeurism. He though Hitchcock had a great background on voyeurism, â€Å"One of the most engrossing, and, in its own way, groundbreaking, studies of voyeurism is Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. The film is universally regarded as a classic, and a strong cadre of critics and scholars considers this to be the director's best feature. †(Berardinelli p. 1). He goes on to talk about the movie and its suspense, but also the great main character played by James Stewart, â€Å"Not only does the movie generate an intensely suspenseful and fascinating situation, but it develops a compelling and memorable character: L. B. Jefferies, a top-flight photographer who, as the result of an accident that left him in a leg cast. (p. 1). Another praise on the movie comes from Christopher Null; he too thought the movie was a classic. The aspect of the movie that caught his eye was the way Hitchcock made it all from a rear window, â€Å"the master craftsmanship on display, placing virtually the entire film within the confines of L. B Jeffries apartment has few parallels in modern cinema. †(Null p. 1). He too agrees with me on another aspect of this great film, helping it to be one o f the all time greatest, not only for Hitchcock but for all movies. And finally my last critic is Lucia Bozzola, who liked the film for its one main shot, â€Å"Keeping the camera in Jeff’s apartment (except for a couple shots near the climax), Hitchcock limits the audience’s view to what Jeff can see and hear from his immobilized perch. †(Bozzola p. 1). Even though I thought this could be a problem for some viewers, it is still a great feat to shoot close to an entire movie on one main shot; another reason why Rear Window is one of the greatest. So after reading all the reviews from the critics and getting diverse answers from regular movie viewers, a person who has yet to see the film should see it for themselves and decide on what they think. As for showing it to either an 1101 or 1102 class, I think it should be seen by more mentally mature young adults in 1102. Primarily due to the voyeurism in the movie, watching all different characters I think they could keep up with it more. This is why Rear Window is a great movie for ENC 1102, along with the romantic tension and multiple subplots. All of the elements are perfect (or nearly so), including the acting, script, camerawork, music (by Franz Waxman), and of course, direction. The brilliance of the movie is that, in addition to keeping viewers on the edges of their seats, it involves us in the lives of all of the characters, from Jeffries and Lisa to Miss Torso. There isn't a moment of waste in 113 minutes of screen time. †
