Opportunity in the NBA for European Basketball Players Essay

Opportunity in the NBA for European Basketball Players European settlers first came to America in 1742 to start over and improve their life styles. It was mostly European settlers that originated America. They did not have a good enough chance to make good money or support there family in Europe so they moved to a new nation to start over or to get away from the war. This is what European basketball players are doing now coming to the NBA in America to improve on there basketball skills as well as make more money. The NBA is the best way for any basketball player to make the most money and to promote themselves. Lately in the NBA you might have noticed a lot more players from Europe playing for different teams in the league.†¦show more content†¦Dirk Nowitzki is a great example of an European who was able to make it as a superstar in the NBA, he still travels home during the off season to visit family and work out in his old gym, which he now calls his summer gym becau se he only gets a chance to exercise there in the summer. By coming to the NBA to play basketball he has adapted our language as well as slang from MTV, BET and the NBA. Since Dirk has come to the NBA he has improved his rebounds by three a game every three years making him a better player offensively off the boards and defensively off the boards. His European background helped shape him into the best basketball player he could be there but he needed better competition in order to further improve his game. He still trains with his same trainer and improves in the off season, but he would not be as good as he is today without playing against the best basketball players in the world. Now in Europe many players are being scouted. To make the chances of European players better to make the big bucks and claim stardom in the NBA, the NBA and the European league agreed to make their rules the same as each others. They now both have the same eight second back court rule and a twenty four second shot clock rule, as well as making the three point line the same distance from the basket as each other. Topic 5: The role and influence of mass media Since the development of technology, mass media becomes an important part of modern society. It influences all areas; therefore, it is raising a question among people about what are the role and influence of mass media. The term mass media refers to the channels of communication (media) that exist to reach a large public audience (the mass of the population). Mass media includes newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and more recently, the Internet (Kristinamp; Susan, 2002). When being asked by police, he admitted committing this crime by copying the crime of Le Van Luyen (â€Å"The second frightened murder,† n.d). Secondly, mass media sometimes invades people’s privacy. Celebrities and politicians are usually the victims because they receive more concern from society than others. The mass media industry sometimes uses private details to make profits rather than showing the full view of somebody’s live to the public; hence, mass media public their scandals or bad behaviour. These invasions are bad for their profession or even destroy their reputation. Mass media even is an origin of spreading out secret information of the government. Once the secret information is leaked out, it will be available all over the world rapidly through mass media. For example, the latest intelligence of the United States, which is flooded in all types of the mass media, is the secret information of the war in Afghanistan. An Analysis of the Poetic Techniques Employed Essay Example For Students

An Analysis of the Poetic Techniques Employed Essay The Cavalier Poets were seen as followers of Ben Johnson because, in the words of Professor Jennifer Mooney, they rank with, rhymed with and modeled themselves after Johnson. The name Cavalier was given to the group as they were a movement who believed in living life to the full. Nina Joined states: They treat life cavalierly, Indeed, and sometimes they treat poetic convention cavalierly too They glorified the ordinary rather than great historical or fantastical epics. However It Is not only this group of poets that Heroic Is connected with, but with the Carper Diem poets such as Andrew Marvel who was the author of the famous To HIS Coy Mistress and Christopher Marlowe. This dissertation will look at the texts: All Things Decay and Die, To Live Merrily and To Trust to Good Verses, To Daffodils, To Bed of Tulips, Ocarinas Gone a Making and the famous To the Virgins to Make Much of Time. Each of these poems are very similar, however there are many differences that render them unique. This dissertation aims to analyses Heretics carper diem poetry by studying the techniques employed by Robert Heroic in his exploration of the concept. One reason why Robert Hayricks poetry Is so successful Is because It Is simple. Part f this stoically Is helped by symbolism that Is used to mirror the ideas of mortality and carper idle. These symbols are universally understood and give the poems not only richness but also an element of clarity that Is gracefully treated. This stoically is brilliantly evident in To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time: Gather Ye rosebuds while ye may Old Time is still a flying But this same flower that smiles today Tomorrow will be Dying. This first stanza displays Hayricks effective stoically. Sarah Gilead states that the first line is the distillation of the carper diem message as it states a mere fact of life: universality that has made Hayricks poetry last throughout the ages. He uses parallels that are everlasting. The rosebuds in this stanza symbolize the fruits of life things we set out to gain in our lives. The rosebuds could be anything they could be ordinary material objects such as a house, or something more sentimental like love. Heroic advises us though, to get them while we are young, for youth quickly dies. Therefore the rosebuds not only symbolize the objects and aspirations of life, but life its self for we too tomorrow will be dying. A similar use of flowers as a humbly of the briefness of life is evident in To Blossoms: Fair pledges of a fruitful tree, Why do ye fall so fast? Blossom is, of course, the blooming of flowers. However, despite their obvious beauty, they quickly wither and die. In this poem Heroic looks upon the dying blossoms of a tree. Through this Heroic sees that these blossoms show how it is the nature of all things to pass away. This is evident as Heroic describes how in its leaves one can read how soon things can end, and by saying: Like you awhile, they glide Into the grave. Thus, Heroic is comparing the lives of blossom, to the lives of humans to find that hey are both the same: they are both mortal and must die. By choosing something like Blossom that passes away so quickly, Heroic exaggerates the shortness of the human life span but in doing so reveals that we too life for only a brief time. This idea is also shown in All Things Decay and Die, which concerns itself not with flowers, but rather with the mighty trees of the forest. Again Heroic shows how no one is invincible by showing that even the mightiest of trees has to decay and die. Nothing withstands time but time itself. Heroic portrays this theme by using the idea f trees. Trees, unlike blossoms, live for hundreds of years. Yet they are not immortal and must therefore die. Heroic displays this by writing: The sovereign of all plants, the oak Droops, dies and falls without the cleavers stroke. What is interesting is the use of the word sovereign as its connotations to royalty and King. This concept of power and nobility is repeated earlier in the poem when the oak is described as the proud dictator of a state like wood, which once more implies strength, power and authority. So why does Heroic use such words to describe a tree? The answer is because he wanted to show that the mighty fall as that through the use of vegetation Heroic has created a simple, yet effective parallel of human life that explains Just how short our lives are and illustrates why exactly we should seize the day. Hayricks poetry, though, has other ideas which illuminate the theme of carper diem. The flowers in To the Virgins and To a Bed of Tulips not only symbolize life, but are used to represent virgin women. These two poems urge the virgins Be not coy, but use your time And while ye may go marry: For having lost but once your prime You may forever tarry. Robert Heroic strikes a note here as it is human nature to put things off and to say Theres always tomorrow, but if we forever tarry then we shall never do what we planned time will catch up on us. In other words: seize the day! To a Bed of Tulips has an almost identical last stanza as again Heroic repeats his message to those unmarried maidens by saying Come virgins, then and see Your frailties, and bemoan ye For, lost like these, twill be As time has never known ye Once more Robert Heroic is drawing a parallel between his two subjects as he amperes these virgins with the Tulips. In this final stanza he describes the virgins as frail and insignificant in the world. This mirrors the rest of the poem as the tulips quickly wither and that they, like the virgins, will die even as the meanest flower. However, these stanzas show another side of Heroic which, four hundred years after these poems were written, is not quite as popular. To the modern reader, who may regard these stanzas as sexist, might find these final verses as an anti climax. After three beautifully lyrical verses of flowers and rising suns, a final stanza describing arraign as a womans greatest ambition is not going to appeal to the career woman of the 21st century. So why, then, are these poems still popular in our modern times? The answer is quite simply that the earlier verses with their simple imagery and the parallels of the sun and flowers make up for a somewhat dated ideology. Flowers though are not the only use of symbolism in Hayricks writings. The sun and example in To the Virgins the second stanza begins: As yet the early-rising sun Has not attained his noon. This shows how the suns rising and setting are used to symbolize the cycle of life. Perhaps not an uncommon thing in literature or religion, but effective as it not only parallels life and death but it also holds links to the idea of heaven and eternal life an ironic feature in poems about mortality. The connection with heaven is evident in To the Virgins when in verse two Heroic states: The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun The higher hes a getting The sooner will his race be run And nearer he is to setting. What Heroic is saying here is that time is wearing on and that life is drawing to a close for the sun is almost setting on a day and on a life. However it is the first line in this stanza The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun that is the most effective. It has connotations with God, the land of eternal youth and happiness the immortality that does not exist in our physical world. The word glorious makes the sun seem dazzling, brilliant, and because glory is also a biblical term, it echoes this link with God and heaven. Lamp though is a curious term to be used to describe something of such importance and beauty. Yet it works, for the sun is the light of Heaven, which all people hope to be our final destination and homeland. Roger B Rolling says in his study of Heretics poetry that the rules of the atmosphere mirror the rules of all life whether it be animal o r plant, and that we are fated to die before we come to our prime. This argument is extremely accurate as the suns daily routine of rising and setting is a mirror of human life that begins in child hood and ends in a withering old age. Commentary on Three Women by Sylvia Plath EssayThe Consenters though, wrote poetry for a reason similar to Heroic in the hope that they and their loves could become immortal. Part of To Live Merrily and to Trust to Good Verses festivity though, is due to its structure. The majority of Hayricks poetry uses a simple ABA rhyme scheme, and To Live Merrily is no exception. Although the poem is longer than the majority of Hayricks poetry (which is usually no more than four verses long) is simple rhyme chem. and flowing verse help to mirror the party atmosphere in which the poem is set. The majority of Hayricks poetry is lyrical short and kinglike. Most of his poems are no more than four verses and use only six to seven syllables per line. This factor, and the simple rhyme scheme create a quick and fast flowing lyrical verse. This is apparent in the poem Too Bed of Tulips. Bright Tulips, we do know You had youre coming hither And fading time does know That ye must quickly wither. This technique results in a poem that is short and to the point (another similarity teens Heroic and his fellow Cavaliers). This simple, song-like rhythm and rhyme scheme are very effective as they help to create that Joyful party atmosphere that is so well portrayed in To Live Merrily and to Trust to Good Verses. However another interpretation sometimes offered is that this flowing rhythm mirrors the reality of mortality. Critic Gordon Braded describes Hayricks lyrical style as almost childlike for he says in his book The Classics and English Renaissance Poetry that Hayricks poetry is like: That of childlike discovery and amazement, a short but bright faculty of attention intentionally distracted by something new. This is evident as in To the Virgins each parallel the sun, flowers, the description of youth are all dealt with quickly before Heroic begins his new channel of thought. The idea of Heretics poetry as being child-like in aspects is also evident in his subject matter as although his theme is serious, his glorification of the sun and of the festive party atmosphere creates something more playfu l and fun. Yet not all Hayricks lyrical poems comply with the same structure. To Blossoms and To Daffodils are both slightly more erratic and complex in rhythm and rhyme. To Blossoms consists of one stanza of eighteen lines, its rhyme scheme is In To soon and noon and spring and thing. The number of syllables in these two poems is also not consistent. In To Blossoms lines range from having four to eight syllables and in To Daffodils there is from two to seven. These poems, you assume on first glance, would have a more rambling rhythm rather than flowing style of the majority of Hayricks other poems, and yet when read the poems retain Hayricks musical sound. This is maintained simply by the combination of both styles. For example at the start of To Daffodils we have his more regular sound: Fair Daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon As yet the early rising sun Has not attained his noon. This first part of the poem uses the iambic foot. What this means is that the stresses fall on every second syllable and therefore when reading the poem the stresses always fall on the last word at each line creating a sing song effect that suits Hayricks lyrical style. However in the second part of the poem: instead of using his regular structure he uses a cross between long and short lines using enjambment. For example lines five o seven use a pattern of one six syllable line sandwiched between two, two syllable lines. This part of the poem is particularly effective as by putting Stay, stay twice on the one line the speaker sounds more urgently pleading as thought the daffodils would wither away before his eyes unless he begged them not to. This structure of the two part stanza is repeated in the second verse as once more it begins with Hayricks usual lyrical form, before changing in the latter halloo a more irregular one. This second half of the stanza uses enjambment to put an emphasis on certain words. We die As your hours do, and dry Away The way the words We die are placed on their own line reminds the reader that we share the same fate as the daffodils. The effect is mirrored with the word away and by putting this emphasis on these words it creates a more drumming rhythm. The manner in which the word Away is put onto a line of its own suggests the hollow finality of death. Contras t between long and short lines ranging from eight syllables to four. The rhyme scheme is also slightly more complex with an ABBACY structure. These factors help to produce a slightly more interesting rhythm as it speeds up and slows down. For example in Stanza 1: Fair pledges of a fruitful tree Why do ye fall so fast? Your date is not so past The longer line followed by the two shorter lines creates a fast first two lines, but when typical Heroic structure dictates that line two should be followed by a another line of eight syllables and it does not then it creates a slower rhythm which makes line three stand out. This is evident to a greater extent of the last lines of each stanza, which are also the shortest at only four syllables. The lines And go at last and Into the grave are the most noticeable of these. The words Into the grave end the poem on a chilling note. The fact that the poem is fairly fast paced up until that point means that the words are given a particular stress and reveal a particularly sudden and abrupt end the very nature of life. Heroic reflects the relative simplicity of his narrative with an exceedingly uncomplicated structure, both with rhyme and rhythm. Even his more complicated verses still hold the musical quality that his simpler poems contain. This is one of Heretics merits as an over adorned structure would clash with the content and would ruin his poetry. On the other hand, when he ventures slightly outwit his simplistic sphere he creates very effective structures that help to emphasis the theme as can be seen in To Daffodils and To Blossoms. In conclusion it is evident that Heroic uses structure, symbolism and an interesting blend of religious ceremonies in his exploration of the theme Carper Diem. Through the simplicity in the rhythm and rhyme of his poems, Heroic has invoked the fleeting quality of life and the beauty of the world we live in. These two ideas are portrayed in the content of these poems through the use of symbolism and imagery. Yet the reason why Heroic, despite having somewhat dated opinions on the role of women, is still a poet of our time is because of his simplicity and ceremonial universality. To describe his poetry one would have to say simple but beautiful, for throughout his writings Heroic pays homage to the flowering of the earth and uses it to show how brief and temporary our presence is a parallel that all can understand. Hayricks blend of different cultures and religions in his writing has also helped to immortality him as it gave his poetry an acceptable but care free moral tone that remains elevate and enjoyable today.

Nutrition Essays (641 words) - Alkaline Earth Metals,

Nutrition Calcium Supplementation and Increases in Bone Mineral Density in Children Scientists have found that peak bone mass in childhood is a major cause of bone mineral density in adulthood and may decrease the risk of osteoporotic fractures. Osteoporotic fractures are those caused by a disease (Osteoporosis) which causes bones to be extremely porous. There are however other factors, such as Genetic and Environmental, that play a major role in determining peak bone mass. Studies done have implied that milk drinking may help in determining peak bone mass. Since milk is a complex food, other factors, not just the calcium, may be responsible for the increase in bone mass. Teenaged girls were studied, and scientists found that an increase in either milk drinking or calcium supplements was positively proportional to the rate of gain in bone mineral density. Is calcium alone an effective tool in increasing the rate of change in bone mineral density in children? A three year, double blinded, placebo controlled study was done on 70 pairs of identical twins whose ages ranged from 6 to 14 years old. Of the 70 pairs, only 45 completed the study. A double blinded study is a study where neither the scientists nor the subjects know who will receive the plasibo or the calcium supplement. All the monozygotic twins completed the three-day food records that the scientists instructed them to do on their initial visit with the families. The food records showed that twenty-two twin pairs were prepubertal throughout the study, nineteen pairs underwent puberty during the study and four other were postpubertal at base line. After the measurement of height, weight, and bone mass from the radius, spine, and hip, a twin from each pair was randomly assigned to take 1000mg of calcium citrate malate which has been shown to be well absorbed in children and young adults. The other twin received the placebo. Calcium and creatine were also measured for safety reasons. All the twins received four 250mg tablets daily and their activities were monitored. After the intervals of six months, one, and two years the radial bone mass was measured. After the third year, bone mass's were measured in the radial, spine and hip. The boy's intake of all nutrients was slightly greater and as expected, the girl's pubertal development was more advanced. The height, weight, and other nutrients had no significant differences. The base-line bone width, mineral density, and bone mineral content were similar in the calcium supplement and placebo groups and to those who drooped out. During the three years, the group who took calcium-supplements received an average of 1612mg of calcium per day, and the placebo group received 908mg per day. No consistent changes in bone area or width were observed but bone mineral density increased by a mean of 1.4 percent in the supplement group. The increases were greater at the midshaft and distal radius. Prepubertal twins had a greater percent increase in bone mineral density at all times while postpubertal and those going through puberty had no significant differences at any time. In conclusion, only the rate of increase in bone mineral density was positively affected by the calcium supplementation. The group who received an average of 719mg per day of calcium supplements had about 3 percent more minerals in the radius than their twins. One factor that was very significant was sexual maturity. Prepubertal twins had about 4 percent greater increase in bone density while postpubertal and those going through puberty had little change. To account for these differences, scientists considered dose sizes and pubertal changes. They believed that pubertal changes such as the secretion of growth hormones and sex steroids were the main cause for the differences. Bone is either changing so rapidly or maximally stimulated that small effects of greater calcium intake can not be detected. Acceptance Essays

When It Was Legal to Mail a Baby

When It Was Legal to Mail a Baby Once-upon-a-time, it was legal to mail a baby in the United States. It happened more than once and by all accounts, the mailed tots arrived no worse for wear. Yes, baby mail was a real thing. On January 1, 1913, the then Cabinet-level U.S. Post Office Department - now the U.S. Postal Service  - first started delivering packages. Americans instantly fell in love with the new service and were soon mailing each other all sorts of items, like parasols, pitchforks and, yes, babies. Smithsonian Confirms Birth of Baby Mail As documented in the article, â€Å"Very Special Deliveries,† by curator of the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum Nancy Pope, several children, including one â€Å"14-pound baby† were stamped, mailed and dutifully delivered by the U.S. Post Office between 1914 and 1915. The practice, noted Pope, became affectionately known by letter carriers of the day as baby mail. According to Pope, with  postal regulations, being few and far between in 1913, they failed to specify exactly â€Å"what† could and could not be mailed via the still very new parcel post service. So in mid-January 1913, an unnamed baby boy in Batavia, Ohio was delivered by a Rural Free Delivery carrier to its grandmother about a mile away. â€Å"The boy’s parents paid 15-cents for the stamps and even insured their son for $50,† wrote Pope. Despite a â€Å"no humans† declaration by the Postmaster General, at least five more children were officially mailed and delivered between 1914 and 1915. Baby Mail Often Got Very Special Handling If the very idea of mailing babies sounds sort of reckless to you,  don’t worry. Long before the then-Post Office Department had created its â€Å"special handling† guidelines for packages, children delivered via â€Å"baby-mail† got it anyway. According to Pope, the children were â€Å"mailed† by traveling with trusted postal workers, often designated by the child’s parents. And fortunately, there are no heartbreaking cases of babies being lost in transit or stamped â€Å"Return to Sender† on record. The longest trip taken by a â€Å"mailed† child took place in 1915  when a six-year-old girl traveled from her mother’s home in Pensacola, Florida, to her father’s home in Christiansburg, Virginia. According to Pope, the nearly 50-pound little girl made the 721-mile trip on a mail train for just 15 cents in parcel post stamps. According to the Smithsonian, its â€Å"baby mail† episode pointed out Postal Service’s importance at a time when traveling long distances was becoming more important  but remained difficult and largely unaffordable for many Americans. Perhaps even more importantly, noted Ms. Pope, the practice indicated how the Postal Service in general, and especially its letter carriers had become â€Å"a touchstone with family and friends far away from each other, a bearer of important news and goods. In some ways, Americans trusted their postmen with their lives.† Certainly, mailing your baby took a lot of plain old  trust. The End of Baby Mail The Post Office Department officially put a stop to â€Å"baby mail† in 1915, after postal regulations barring the mailing of human beings enacted the year before were finally enforced. Even today, postal regulations allow the  mailing of live animals, including poultry, reptiles, and bees, under certain conditions. But no more babies, please. About the Photographs As you can imagine, the practice of â€Å"mailing† children, usually at costs far lower than regular train fare, drew considerable notoriety, leading to the taking of the two photographs shown here. According to Pope, both photos were staged for publicity purposes and there are no records of a child actually being delivered in a mail pouch. The photos are two of the most popular among the extensive Smithsonian Photographs on Flicker photo collection.

Ethics in Negotiation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Ethics in Negotiation - Essay Example It is usually an ‘anything that sells’ approach that is adopted by such sellers. Sellers tend to arbitrarily decide on prices since merchandise is acquired from a plethora of sources with no objective means of deciding on price (Kugel, 2013). They thus pitch a price according to the profile of the customer who visits, based on personal discernments about their willingness and ability to pay for the items. Most customers are however aware of this fact, and the more affluent ones quickly reject the initial price as it borders on exploitation. Hence, bargaining becomes necessary to avoid being taken advantage of by crafty retailers practicing price discrimination to maximize profits. With stalls set up very close to one another, a customer can look through the catalog of a number of vendors whilst standing in one of them. He can thus be aware of the quality of items offered by other vendors, which if greater, can be used as leverage against the current one. Vendors are typically reluctant to let go of customers once they start negotiations, and threats about opting to visit other stalls are extremely effective in getting them to reduce their asking price. They are aware that customers benefit from choice and selection, and if they do not comply with their reasonable wishes, another vendor will. A major factor behind the existence and prevalence of bargaining in flea markets is that of information asymmetry. In a normal market, a customer is aware about the details of merchandise such as the manufacturer, area of production, quality etc. This is not the case with flea markets, where customers are aware that they may be getting anything from a good quality reject of a top notch brand to a used up, ready for scrap item. Sellers in most cases know more about the products origins etc., and can thus often fool customers in believing that the product may be of higher quality than what

Effective Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Effective Management - Essay Example In this essay, the most important characteristics of an effective manager are discussed. According to Whetton and Cameron, (2005) the most important personal; qualities essential for a manager are the awareness of one's own self, ability to manage stress and ability to solve problems analytically and creatively. First and foremost quality that builds clarity in the thought process is the self awareness. Cox(1994) in his work mentions that, self awareness is very essential to have a concept of self regard and worthiness to define the persons' emotional intelligence . More awareness of the person's personal values gives direction when decisions have to be made. When a person is aware of the inner self, then they can appreciate the differences between individuals when working in a group. An effective manager feels comfortable in welcoming different viewpoints and can create a shared sense of commitment in a team. The next personal quality that is very essential is the person's anility to manage stress constructively. The manager may have this ability by nature or should acquire this ability to manage stress. Stress cannot be avoided in today's competitive business environment. But the manager should not let the stress to hamper the judgments made. Effective management of stress can be achieved though time management, team building and work redesign. Managing the stress is very essential to develop resilience in the individual who can steer the organization through the odds to success. The other personal skill that has to be possessed by a manager is the ability to solve problems analytically and creatively. A manager should be able to think beyond the traditional boundaries of thought. If the manager has the ability to do so, he can create alternative solutions which are far beyond the traditional options available. He should be able to combine unrelated alternatives to create an alternative solution for a problem which can create a platform for innovation. Interpersonal skills Managers are supposed to have a range of interpersonal skills like coaching, counseling, offering supportive communication, exercising influence, motivating others and managing conflicts. Of all these interpersonal skills the ability to offer supportive communication is very essential. According to Losada and Heaphy(2004), supportive communication is the communication that seeks to preserve a positive relationship between the communications while still addressing the problem at hand. It allows you to provide negative feedback or to resolve a difficult issue with another person and as a result can strengthen the relationship. Next important aspect of interpersonal skill is the leadership skill. Leadership expert McFadden(2007) comments that, "the leader should have passion for the people which means that the leader regards the people more than himself. In order to fulfill this requirement, the success of the leader will be heavily contingent upon whether he has accomplished the first "P" - passion for purpose". A leader of any group is like the leader of an expedition; people are trusting in his guidance because they believe that his expertise is the result of him having already made

The Rape of the Lock Essay Example for Free

The Rape of the Lock Essay The Rape of the Lock is an outstanding mock- epic in the English Literature written by Alexander Pope. It is considered a humorous poem, as well as a combination of the classical models of epic and satire. Since the poem is based on an actual incident among Pope’s acquaintances, he is persuaded to write the story to mock his friends so they do not take the situation too seriously. Besides, the author focuses on the upper class in London, which seems to have lost the value of important matters. First of all, it can be said that the upper-class characters portrayed in The Rape of the Lock, especially Belinda, are mocked because it seems that they are narrow-minded as regards their ideas about the society where they live and they do not take into consideration important subjects. In the poem, Belinda is so concerned about her beauty that when the Baron cuts a lock of her hair she gets furious: â€Å"Then flashed the living lightnings from her eyes, / And screams of horror rend the affrighted skies.†(canto 3, lines 155-156). Belinda feels frustrated not only because she is humiliated in public, but also because being beautiful in that society means power. Her anger can be related to the fact that ladies used to devote much time to their beauty, spending hours at the dressing table; the â€Å"altar’s site,†(1.127). Apart from that, dancing and playing cards were major events to win the heart of a gentleman. Similarly, men had no concern with significant matters either as they were interested in being powerful, getting more money and flirting with ladies. The Baron, for example, the male character in the poem, feels victorious when he cuts Belinda’s lock: â€Å"`Let wreaths of triumph now my temples twine, ´ / (The victor cried); `the glorious prize is mine!†(3.161-162). As the characters focus on trivial matters as if they are truly meaningful, their flaws and weaknesses are exposed in the poem. By means of exaggeration, the author pretends to make the readers laugh at their own defects to moralize some ideas in society. The pair of scissors given to The Baron by Clarissa is referred as â€Å"A two-edged weapon†(3.128) to make fun of the situation. In addition, the fact that Belinda’s hair is cut is not a serious incident but she is in despair since it is her valuable possession. In the poem, Clarissa states that although â€Å"frail beauty must decay, / Curled or uncurled, since locks will turn to gray,† (5. 25-26), it is important to keep a sense of humor. Similarly, The Baron is quite extravagant and exhibits a childlike behavior when taking revenge that he clearly proclaims: â€Å"So long my honor, name, and praise shall live!† (3.170). It is possible to observe that he is not able to accept the fact that he has been defeated in a game by a girl. Apart from that, the card game between Belinda and The Baron is perceived as a real battle between two armies, with â€Å"halberds in their hand† (3.42). As a conclusion, it is clearly shown in the poem how society has lost the ability to value what is really important in life. It seems that the characters cannot decipher between serious events and insignificant ones. The rape of Belinda’s lock of hair, for instance, is an unimportant incident since she could have experienced a worse situation. Moreover, it is worth analyzing this poem as it reflects how ridiculous any society can be when it takes into account events, which do not really matter in life. Individuals should open their eyes to be able to value simple things that happen in our daily lives.

Lorraine Hansberrys A Raisin In The Sun :: essays research papers

A Raisin in the Sun is a classic tragedy. Through struggle the Younger’s all experience some hardship in learning the value of money and equality. I will have to say that the play was very interesting yet hard to watch. My first impression was that the stage was slanted. I’m still not sure why the stage was slanted and would love to ask the director of why it was slanted. Secondly, the actors were very hard to hear due to their soft speaking.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  From the play I received two major underlying messages. First was from Mama’s plant. This plant symbolized all that the Younger family was; a half alive plant that is growing in all direction waiting for the spring to bloom. This is the perfect description of the Younger’s. The family is struggling with what to do with the insurance check and finally realize that by equality they will bloom into what they truly desire.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Secondly I saw that the Younger’s are a family of routine. It seems that each member is caught in their own struggle and can’t break the cycle they are caught in. It is not until someone makes a sacrifice that the family is able to flourish.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The lighting made a favorable impression. The blue at the beginning sets the â€Å"blue† mood that wonders over most of the family. The soft white that lights the house for the rest of the play was perfect since the family has a dim mood cast over them. As far as overall lighting scheme goes I would give the play a solid A.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  My next impression came from the props in the house. The bed, couch, and chair were all but falling apart. There was no doubt that the family had little as far as possession but what they had they were proud of. They were not a family of pride but they took joy in what they had worked hard for. I was given a feeling of a family struggling to make it in the world but determined to reach the top of the mountain. Overall I would give the props a B   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The costumes of the actors also made an impact. Walter Lee was always wearing formal, expensive looking clothing. His clothes went along with his ambitions of wealth and high rank. Mama’s clothes were always simply and barley of higher quality than rags. These clothes also go a long way to represent those philosophies that she lived by.

Political Parties Essay

Political parties are an essential component within a democratic society. By competing in elections and encouraging citizens with certain different views of society, parties also offer citizens a wide variety of choices in governmental representation, opportunities for political contribution, and chances to form their country’s future. Although political parties play such an influential role on a country, often the concerns of the people fall on deaf ears, breaking down the trust that the public had within the parties. When public assurance in political parties is diminished, the whole democratic system falls victim to it. In all democratic systems, the party system must be deeply and strongly rooted in the make up of society. Political parties are the main framework of any democratic society. They are the means by which the public come together freely to drive for the presidency, express their ideas, and define their ambitions for their civilization. There may be political parties without democracy being apparent, but there can be no democracy without political parties. Parties in many countries, including our own South African parties, may be faulty, but they are also crucial in democratic authority. When political parties function effectively, they succeed in developing a few common ideas between a large group of people, and in doing this, they place pressure on the ruling party. Thus, they help put citizens’ small concerns into a national context. Citizens may be separated over leaders, or policies but political parties can organize these differences by compromising certain things and helping societies to unite. In addition, political parties train and nominate political leaders who will accept a role in ruling society. Through their efforts to control and influence public policy, political parties play an in-between role, connecting the organisations of government to economic, ethnic, cultural, religious and other general groups. They can convey support behind law, improving the public wellbeing, and develop citizens’ interests. Their participation in elections allows citizens to hold them responsible for their policies and actions. In multi-party systems, and based on the countries they represent, political parties often express contradictory views on public plans. These just differences of ideas are not only an important part of the democratic course, but the exchanges they generate can also help to create a better understanding of the issues and possible solutions, possibly leading to new insights. Further, when parties in competition present themselves as an alternative, all parties always try to obtain the best plan in public interest, therefore the winner in the end is society.

Diversity Training Essay

Diversity training is training intended to increase cultural awareness, knowledge and skills, and increase the inclusion of identity groups. This ultimately is designed to assist an organization promote a more diverse corporate culture, protect against civil rights issues, and promote better teamwork. This is accomplished through training in communications to all levels of an organization, reinforcement of policies and procedures to be more inclusive, design and implementation of strategies that limit the potential problems associated with lower diversity levels or diversity awareness. TYPES: Diversity Training Workshops * Diversity training workshops last about two to three hours, and courses last a minimum of four days. Workshops and courses teach conflict resolution skills, preparation for increases in racial and gender diversity, international work and safeguarding against harassment. Unfortunately, diversity training through workshops or courses produces only short-term positive effects. It seems that the â€Å"afterglow† of this type of training fades fast. Diversity Offices * Having a diversity office provides more training opportunities than a workshop or course does. Diversity offices can offer follow-up sessions in addition to the more extensive three-day to one-week diversity training sessions they conduct. Sojourner Training * Companies that compete in the international marketplace use sojourner training to help employees who will relocate to a foreign country. Once employees go through this type of diversity training prior to managing or working in foreign operations, their effectiveness increases. Sojourner training also provides counselling to help employees readjust to their return home. Ongoing Reinforcement * Rather than simply offering a short-term course or workshop, companies that make a real difference in diversity training are those that practice equality on an ongoing basis. In these companies, diversity is not just an add-on but also a major part of the corporate culture. In other words, to truly achieve diversity in the workplace, a company must practice what it preaches. Examples of ongoing reinforcement are hiring a diverse employee pool, recognition for diversity efforts, allowing minority groups to form support groups and celebrating cultures via special programs. How to Develop a Diversity Training Program Developing a diversity training program for your organization typically involves assessing your team’s needs, designing materials that reflect your training requirements, delivering workshops and reference materials and evaluating your efforts. Companies that implement diversity training programs to advocate workplace diversity tend to have higher employee retention rates, improved morale, reduced lawsuits and improved recruiting. Step 1 Initiate a diversity training program development project by identifying the project sponsors and stakeholders. Interview these people, conduct focus groups or conduct online surveys to gather input about the current environment in your organization and what behaviours need to change. Common topics include managing change, effective communication, cultural awareness, dealing with gender issues and conflict resolution. Step 2 Define objectives for your program. For example, you may want to minimize miscommunication and misinterpretation on the job. You may also want employees to recognize and value differences in age, experience, social customs, sense of time and demeanour. Achieving these types of objectives enables you to manage a culturally diverse and multi-generational workforce and resolve minor incidents before they become bigger problems. Step 3 Design your workshop. Prepare presentation materials to instruct participants about definitions and concepts associated with diversity. Intersperse long periods of instruction with interactive activities such as ice breakers, role-playing exercises and case studies. Ensure your content flows smoothly and covers all the relevant topics. Step 4 Deliver your workshop at team meetings, company events or separate training sessions. Decide how long your session should last, depending on the number of topics you want to cover, the number of participants and the participant’s familiarity with the content. Step 5 Create a quiz to test employees on their knowledge of diversity topics. Step 6 Evaluate your program’s effectiveness by creating an online survey to assess participant satisfaction. Talk with managers several months after your event to see if people have changed their behaviour and become more tolerant of people whose values may differ from their own. The Advantages of Diversity Training Fewer Lawsuits: One of main causes of concern in upper management is lawsuits filed by employees for discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful dismissal. Diversity training helps all employees in a company to know what the laws are and what the company policies are. With training, people learn what acceptable behaviour is when dealing with a subordinate, peer or someone you feel is different from you in a way such as race, religion, nationality or physical abilities. In many cases, a situation is interpreted differently by the people involved, leading to misunderstandings and charges of wrongdoing. Once the employees have clear guidelines on how they should behave towards one another in the workplace, there are few misunderstandings and, subsequently, fewer lawsuits. Diversity training reinforces the policies that are already in place to protect employees and the company. Increased Job Satisfaction: When diversity training is successful, individuals are happier with their jobs. The training helps them to understand what is expected of them and what they can expect from their peers and supervisors. During diversity training, people get to ask question and discuss their concerns. Along with this knowledge and the feeling of being heard, people have a better understanding of the workplace environment and their role in it. This job satisfaction leads to a higher retention rate. Content employees are less likely to quit and look for new jobs. Employees happy in their jobs are more motivated and are more productive. These improved attitudes help the company as a whole to run more efficiently. More Diverse Workplace: Diversity training points out how alike people are, even if on the surface, they seem different. This knowledge leads to hiring managers and human resources personnel being more open to hiring people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Having a more diverse workplace makes the work place a more interesting environment. The training also unifies people with diverse backgrounds around a common goal. With proper training, a diversified workplace has everyone working together as a team to help the company succeed and grow. Disadvantages of Diversity Training Hiring Manager Authority: In the name of increasing workplace diversity, employers may feel pressured to recruit applicants from diverse groups. Many hiring managers believe that employer edicts concerning increasing diversity require them to overlook more suitably qualified applicants in favor of applicants who bring diversity — not necessarily talent — to the organization. In these circumstances, hiring managers may begin to resent how increasing workplace diversity affects their ability to exercise independent judgment, as well as their authority in making hiring decisions. Workplace Relationships: Employees who realize the company’s goal is to increase diversity may feel they are less important if they don’t represent the typical diverse populations that focus on race, sex, national origin, age and disability. In a workplace where employees don’t belong to diverse populations, these employees may feel undervalued and unappreciated based purely on the fact that they don’t represent diversity. They also might believe that employees from diverse groups have more opportunities for advancement, thus disrupting the working relationships they once had with colleagues and co-workers. Myriad Accommodations: Although the premise of workplace diversity is mutual respect, making accommodations for numerous diverse groups’ demands can become burdensome on employers, making diversity management difficult. Employee requests and work constraints based on religion, national origin, gender and race can become overwhelming if your workplace has so much diversity that it takes a full-time human resources staff member just to keep track of accommodating the needs of diverse groups in the workplace. Examples of accommodating numerous diverse populations include translating materials into multiple languages and having interpreters on hand for meetings with employees, accommodating employee absences due to religious practices or disabilities, as well as adjusting business hours to coincide with preferred schedules for employees with different work styles and personal obligations. Diversity Training at Infosys A global company must reflect the diversity of the world it serves. Their employees represent the widest possible variety of nationalities, cultures, gender identities, employment histories, and levels of physical ability. They recruit employees from global talent pools and provide paths for professional growth to all members of society. Infosys recognizes and promotes this power of diversity to drive innovation. Infosys actively fosters inclusivity across business units and company offices. How to Use Psychology in Advertising to Make People Buy 5,000. That’s the number of advertisements that the average consumer is exposed to every day. You are probably thinking†¦ â€Å"How the heck can I make people notice my advertisements?† Advertisers have long discovered that they can leverage psychology to find what attracts attention, leaves an impression, persuades, and leads to the act of purchase. That being said, you can use psychology to make sure that your advertising is actually working. Ok, that’s awesome. But how? If you want to learn how to make your advertisements actually work, by work I mean make people buy your product, keep on scrolling’.👇 On average, people are exposed to nearly 5,000 ads per day. #advertising. The Psychology of Advertising Chances are you specialize in marketing, not psychology, so this area may be a little†¦ fuzzy. So what is the Psychology of Advertising? Psychology explores human nature, the psyche, and why people behave the way they do. Advertising explores the art of influencing human behavior to make certain purchase decisions. Its no surprise that these two areas converge. Psychology explores human nature, the psyche, and why people behave the way they do. Advertising explores the art of influencing human behavior to make certain purchase decisions. Basic Types of Advertisements Nowadays, there are so many different types of advertisements. Whether you’re using traditional tactics or digital tactics, understanding the psychology behind your advertisements is important. Here are a few of the basic forms of advertisements: Traditional Commercials Newspaper Magazine Radio Direct mail Billboard Digital Social Google Ads Search Display Inbox Sponsored listings Whether you’re running a Google ad, or just put up a billboard, you’ll want to choose either the thinking or feeling approach for your advertisement. CPM vs. HEM There are two basic models that explain how people process information, the Consumer Processing Model and the Hedonic, Experiential Model. In other words, thinking and feeling models. Chances are you’ll lean towards one model, depending on your product and audience. Ads don’t have to be one or the other, think of it more as a scale. Thinking Thinking approaches of advertisements allow consumers to use logic and reason to buy the product based on features or solving a problem. You can think of this advertisement as facts based if that helps. You should use a thinking approach if: You want to highlight direct information, features, benefits, or advantages. Your product is interpreted as a product used to solve a serious need, for example, migraine medication. It aligns with your brand voice  and target audience. Use the thinking approach if: You want to highlight features, benefits, or information Your product relates to a serious issue The approach aligns with your brand voice + target audience An example of an advertisement that uses a CPM approach, or a thinking approach, is Apple’s commercial that introduces their new feature launch of the iPhone XS and iPhone XR. It’s clear that they are highlighting the specific features and benefits of their products with no fluff. Feeling According to a 2016 Nielson Report, ads that generated emotional response got a 23% lift in sales volume. Feeling approaches use emotion to capture consumer behavior. Whether it’s fun, fantasy, or fear, the HEM approach persuades consumers using emotion. You should use a feeling approach if: You can leverage some type of emotion (humor, fear, love, etc.) that will lead a consumer to buy your product. You want to make light of a situation. It aligns with your brand voice and target audience. Use the feeling approach if: You want to leverage some type of emotion You want to make light of a situation The approach aligns with your brand voice + target audience In this commercial, Apple uses a feel-good approach, persuading people to share gifts. Although this ad doesn’t focus on a specific product or feature, they leverage their brand voice and give consumers a good feeling. With over 21 million views, it’s safe to say they got the message out there. Persuasion Techniques Using Emotion If you’ve decided to use the feeling approach for your advertisement, it’s important to choose the emotion that best appeals to your product, target audience, and brand. I’ve listed 4 of the basic emotions that people use in advertising. Humor Humor drives memorability.  If you’re looking to make people remember your product and your brand, this may be the best option for you. Making people laugh helps people remember your brand in a positive light. A company that slayed the humor game is Old Spice. Using humor in your advertisements makes people remember it more than any other emotion.Fear Using fear in an ad can be tricky, but if done right it can be very effective. This tactic uses fear as a persuasion technique by using your product to solve a problem or to change a behavior. Excitement Using excitement  in your advertising can be perfect if you have a feature launch or something exciting to share with your audience. Excitement causes your mind and body to react, which can make people more likely to act and make a purchasing decision. Sadness Making people sad is a great way to get their attention. I know how awful that sounds, but it’s true. Remember that sad puppy commercial  that Budweiser created back in 2014 with the puppies? It was sad in the beginning but made you feel good at the end, and was very memorable. 4 basic emotions to persuade Humor Fear Excitement Sadness Every emotion persuades consumers in a different way, so make sure that the emotion you choose is the best match for your product and brand, and ultimately helps you towards the goal of your advertisement (a.k.a. make people buy). There are 7 important steps that happen before your customer purchases. Ultimately, you have control over almost all of these steps. Exposure to Information This is the very first thing that happens when a viewer sees your ad. This step stems from brand awareness. If it’s someone's very first time seeing the ad, let alone your brand, they may not even notice it. That’s why it’s important to factor in repetition to make your audience more exposed to your advertisement. Selective attention Now that your consumer has been exposed to the information, it’s time to grab their attention (and never let go). This step is tricky because you have no control over your consumer and there is no guarantee that they will see your ad. What I mean is that just because you run a commercial, it doesn’t mean people are watching the tv, or just because you run a display ad, it doesn’t mean the consumer even looks at it. You have to make your target audience notice you with all the distractions going on in their everyday life. Using the Color Psychology  principles to attract viewers is one of the smartest ways to achieve their undivided attention. Recommended Reading: https://.com/blog/color-psychology-marketing/ Comprehension This step is pretty important because if your consumer can’t comprehend what you’re selling, chances are they aren’t going to purchase. If you’re using the HEM approach, it’s important that you make sure that your underlying message is clear. Don’t let the message in your advertisement overshine your product. Agreement You’ve captured their attention, they understand what your selling, what’s next? Agreement. If you have a credible message that aligns with your target audience and their needs, this step should naturally happen. If you want more tips on creating effective articles, read this. Retention and Retrieval Think back to the last ad you saw that you actually stood out. Why did it stand out to you? This is your chance to make your ad stand out from the rest so when the consumer is ready to purchase, they think of you and not your competition. Check out what your competitors are doing and make sure that your advertisement is different than theirs (and better 😉). Decision Making At this step you’re so close, yet so far away. Your consumer realizes that your product may be right for them, but there are so many considerations in the decision making process. Adding a call to action could be the extra push that your consumer needs to buy your product. If the consumer decides to buy your product after seeing your advertisement, it doesn’t mean that they will follow through. Keep in mind that the product isn’t sold until that purchase is made. Action This final step was the goal all along, to make the consumer purchase your product. Give yourself a pat on the back because this means your advertisement worked. Through all the ads that consumers are exposed to and the different steps their brain takes before purchasing a product, they chose yours.
